due South

This Canadian show presents interesting challenges because of the replacement of one of the two main characters two-thirds of the way through the "canon" of televised episodes.

Hero - Constable Benton Fraser

Mentor - Predictably, both Ray Vecchio and Lieutenant Welch function as Mentors. The Ray Vecchio character provides advice that guides Fraser to action by opposition as often as not, making Ray Vecchio a very unusual type of Mentor. (It could be argued that Fraser Mentors Ray Vecchio as much as he is Mentored by him.) More interestingly, Fraser, Sr. functions as a Trickster-Mentor, providing both advice and comic relief.

Herald - Unlike the other shows, the Herald for due South is not a person, but a deed. It's the murder of his father that serves as the Call to Action for Fraser.

Shadow - Not surprisingly, Fraser is Shadowed by his father's murder and the unfolding story of how much more complex this murder was than originally appeared. He's also Shadowed by Victoria as his lost, and presumed unworthy, love object. His inability to choose personal happiness over his duty is his internal Shadow, his internal Quest is to learn to accept, and express, love.

Shapeshifter - Victoria and Girard are both examples of Shapeshifter-Shadow combinations whose real nature is hidden, changes, or seems to change. Inspector Thatcher is also a Shapeshifter of the anima type, with her rigid devotion to duty and inability to deal with personal emotions. (It's fitting that Fraser's anima reflects his own personality so closely, revealing that he is unable to separate himself from his job. That is his deepest need, the ability to become whole by introducing a separate vision of himself outside of his work.)

Trickster - Ray Kowalski is an example of the Trickster-Hero combination. He provides comic relief and demonstrates Heroic qualities that are alien to Fraser, but very attractive because of one thing that Fraser can identify with--Ray's willingness to sacrifice himself for others. (Kowalski's commitment to his duty is more obviously and intensely focused on taking care of people than Vecchio's, giving Fraser two models against which he can measure his own actions. In this way, Kowalski functions to upset Fraser's "status quo" and make Fraser re-think his beliefs. He learns to see that admitting his emotions and accepting them is not necessarily going to be detrimental to his duty.)

Other Tricksters are Frannie and Turnbull in more obviously comic roles.

Threshold Guardian - Assorted criminals. Also, and almost more importantly in the early days of the show, Fraser had to face and accept or overcome assorted aspects of American big city life, or what I think of as "Cultural Threshold Guardians."
